Driving is dangerous.

Humans are prone to making mistakes – and when you make a mistake while driving a 3,500 lb. vehicle, you can easily hurt or even kill someone.

So it’s good thing that cars will start driving themselves soon.

But which companies will produce the self-driving cars of the future? According to a recent HuffPost article, Tesla has positioned itself as the leader of the autonomous vehicle industry. Here’s why:

They Have The Hardware

Other car companies developing autonomous vehicles, such as GM and BMW, are waiting until they get their software figured out before they work on mass-producing cars capable of driving themselves.

Tesla is a few steps ahead. The Tesla Model 3 is set to be the first mass-produced car equipped for autonomous driving (it’s scheduled to be released in about a year).

They Have The Data

Tesla also collects data from all their vehicles that are currently on the road. Other companies rely on test vehicles for data collection. Tesla has more information to work with, so you should expect their self-driving software to be ready relatively soon.

They Have The Direct-To-Consumer Advantage

Selling cars isn’t the only way dealerships make money. They generate much of their income by repairing cars, too.

Electric vehicles don’t need as much maintenance as cars that run on gas. Dealerships only have so much space, and they prefer to stock up on cars that they can keep making money on after they’ve been sold. The GMs and BMWs of the world will likely face some pushback from dealerships when they try to move their low-maintenance vehicles.

Unlike most car companies, Tesla sells directly to customers. They won’t have to deal with the dealership problem.
