5 Ways To Save Money On Gas

It’s hard to turn a profit in any industry.

It’s especially hard to turn a profit if you run a courier company, propane delivery service, or any other kind of business that sends employees out to meet with customers. On top of the usual business expenses, these companies also have to pay for things like vehicle maintenance and gas.

Saving money on gas will increase your profit margin. That’s obvious. The question is, what can you actually do to save money on gas?

These five techniques will help:

5. Change Your Air Filter

A dirty, clogged air filter will make your car less fuel-efficient. It only costs $30 or so to replace an old air filter with a new one, and it won’t take long to make up for that expense with your savings on gas.

4. When You’re On The Highway, Use AC Instead Of Rolling The Windows Down

Gas does more that just move your car down the road. The radio, air conditioning, and everything else you can control from your seat is powered by gas as well.

So it just seems like common sense that turning off the AC and rolling the windows down to stay cool would save gas, right?

Wrong. At least, that’s sometimes wrong. Rolling your windows down creates drag. It doesn’t make much of a difference when you’re driving slow, but once you get over 50 mph, you’ll actually save gas by rolling up your windows and turning the AC on instead.

3. Stay Under The Speed Limit

In addition to putting your drivers at greater risk of getting into an accident, speeding is also a waste of gas.

But how are you going to know if your drivers are speeding or not? You’re in the office, and they’re on the road. You can’t physically see them.

That’s why you need vehicle tracking software. With GPS tracking, you’ll be able to see where your drivers and how fast they’re going in real-time. When a driver starts speeding, you’ll know about it immediately. You can get them on the phone and tell them to cut it out right away.

2. Don’t Accelerate Or Stop Suddenly

Sudden stops eat up a lot of gas. Instruct your drivers to stay at least one car length away from the driver in front of them for every 10 mph they’re driving (for example, if they’re going 60 mph, they should stay 6 car length’s back). That way, they won’t need to stomp on their brakes if the driver in front of them stops suddenly.

1. Use Route Planning Software

In addition to a GPS tracking tool, you should also invest in route planning software.

Such software can reduce travel time by up to 30%. Less travel time, of course, means you won’t need to spend as much money on gas.
